Probably the first tip to follow when preparing for the interview is to ensure you have at least one relevant and current clients for whom you can produce a personal recommendation. The next step is to compile a “shortlist” of possible future clients. It is recommended that you send a CV to potential future clients via a specialist recruitment agency. At this stage it is important to note that applying for a senior finance role at a leading investment bank will almost certainly result in you being rejected. This is due to the nature of the jobs available at these organisations and the calibre of applicants they attract.

One of the first interview questions you will be asked is “Tell me about a time when you found yourself having to manage a conflict”. A common mistake made by interviewers is that they ask this question. They then proceed to ask you a series of questions designed to highlight how “courageous” or “strong-willed” you are. The purpose of the conflict question is to highlight your personal impact on resolving the conflict. As such, knowing how you managed a conflict is absolutely vital. Remember that the Conflict Resolution professionals that you will be speaking to have heard this exact phrase hundreds of times before from you!

An excellent strategy to employ when preparing for a case interview is to practise your answers with friends and family members. If possible, try to get someone who is neutral to ask you questions relating to your career. Whilst there is no guarantee that you will receive an interview (as cases vary widely),it is highly likely that you will receive a few case interviews if you meet and practice with case interviewers.

One of the main features of a good case interview is the “problem solving” session. A case study would be incomplete without a series of problem solving sessions. These can take anywhere between one and three hours. However, even a short session will help you develop your problem solving skills and demonstrate to the case managers that you possess a versatile set of skills and can be trusted to resolve any problems they throw at you.

Practice your presentations outside of the interview room. You can use YouTube, radio and television networks and even printed media to practice your case interviews. In particular, practice your interviews outside of the office by contacting your manager or anyone else in HR that you think might be able to help you. Explain your reasons for approaching them, providing some brief information about yourself and how you can help them with their recruitment needs.

During your case interviews, there are two types of questions that you should be prepared for. The first type is simply a question designed to bring the panel closer to your unique qualities and experience, whilst also allowing the case managers to identify how closely you understand their needs. The second type of question is more in-depth and will ask you to present an opinion or a pro-active approach to a particular problem. The two types of questions are similar to those used during an in-person interview, but it is important to note that while an in-person case may be a little more one-to-one,in which case you are likely to be asked to provide a few additional details and insight on your role, the McKinsey case interview is more likely to be done in a group environment. The best way to prepare for this is by practicing, whether it be in a classroom or at home by watching a series of video interviews.

One of the best tips when preparing for a case interview is to think like a potential client. As part of doing research,it is important to spend some time thinking like a client. For example,if the client were making an application for a job,you would want to conduct yourself as if the job were yours. Taking a few moments to consider how you could answer specific questions, and how your personality would fit in with the organisation can help you to ace your case interviews.
