LAKE LENORE
by Don Lamont

Joe and Heather Schemenauer live in the town of Lake Lenore Saskatchewan, situated on a hill just south of the huge prairie lake with the same name. Fishing for years in this lake was just okay, then came some lean times. Thatās when Joe and Heather and other members of the community decided to try and do something to improve the fishing resource.

Joe, who at the time was a fisheries chairman with the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, got an number of individuals and groups together ( including Ducks UnLimited and S.E.R.M.) and applied for funding for a walleye rearing pond on the west shore of Little Lake Lenore. A couple of years later at a cost of $35,000 the rearing pond was ready to start pumping life back into this lake. Now in its 14th year of operation, this pond has raised hundreds of thousand walleye fry to the fingerling stage, most of which have gone back to repopulate Lake Lenore. But Joe and Heather did not stop there! They found out that a number of spawning pike and walleye were moving up Ranch Creek, one of the tributaries of Lake Lenore and becoming trapped in the marsh at the end of the creek when waters receded.

In order to rectify the problem, they worked in conjunction with Ducks Unlimited to put in a gate below the marsh to stop fish migration up the creek. This one of a kind design marks another innovative step in helping to manage a fisheries resource.

The angling success in Lake Lenore has improved every year and now Joe and Heather want to make sure the public get a chance to enjoy this great resource. The final paperwork is being put in place that will see the building of a new boat launch on the main section of the lake.

There are a number of success stories like this across the prairies and in other parts of Canada. Itās the volunteers, the people that care, that make all the difference!
