National Geographic Traveler wins TIAC excellence award
THE winner of the 2004 Tourism Industry Association of Canada national award for tourism
excellence, presented by The Globe and Mail, is National Geographic Traveler magazine. Don
Lamont, who writes the Complete Angler column in the Winnipeg Free Press was a runner-up. The
award was presented in Whitehorse this past October during Canada's Tourism Leadership
Summit. National Geographic Traveler, the world's most widely read travel magazine, is published
eight times a year by the National GeographicSociety, a non-profit organization dedicated to
sustaining the natural environment.
Lamont was cited as Manitoba's "fisheries ambassador" for promoting the province as an angling
destination through his nationally televised angling show, The Complete Angler, articles in
national publications and his weekly column in the Free Press.
"His efforts have showcased Manitoba nationally and internationally and helped elevate the
province as one of the top fishing destinations in North America," according to In-Fisherman
magazine. Lamont has also supported initiatives to increase awareness of Manitoba as a tourism
destination for anglers and works with local business leaders to develop angling opportunities for
visitors to Winnipeg. The other runner-up was Julie Ovenell-Carter of Ovenell-Carter
Communications, a freelance travel writer and photographer based on Bowen Island, B.C., who
specializes in Canadian destinations
The three finalists were chosen by panels of judges from among more than 100 nominations
